Hank & Heidi

HEIDI

I grew up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. Graduating from R. L. Putnam Vocational Technical High School in Commercial Art.

Not really following my high school trade….My work experience varied.

I went into day care working with infant and toddlers. I went to Springfield Technical Community College for certification in early childhood education. I went from Assistant Teacher, Lead Teacher to the director of the YMCA downtown day care, 107 children and 17 staff members.

I moved back to Cape Cod for a few years busing tables and take out at the Eastham Lobster Pool…to making equestrian riding chaps and moto chaps and saddlebags at Barnstable Riding and Chaps in Brewster. I also worked with my brother’s landscaping business Simply Landscaping. This is where I came into the carpenrty trade…working for Deborah Paine Inc. A high-end builder in Truro Mass. I hired as an extra hand to complete a deadline project. From there I was introduced to all aspects in the finish side of the trade. I work and learned from her company for about three years.

.From there I wanted to try my hand at my own business. Heidi’s Custom Works, glass etching; privacy screens, car windows, transom windows, drinking glasses. I did the art show circuit and fairs for a few years still working part time for Deborah Paine Inc. traveling from CC to Western Mass each week. Unfortunately it was more of a hobby and I needed more of a full time income.

In 2004 while at the Matoon St. Festival in Springfield Thor Construction was a sponsor from a flyer who did historic restorations and renovations on Victorian, Colonial and older homes. I called and spoke to Hank about employment. Thinking I wouldn’t hear back from him. In about a week I got a call asking if I could come work for a few days to see what I was able to do…. I did and was able to hold my own with his crew as well as his frame crew. Two weeks later I was an employee for Thor Construction.

From 2004 through 2007 I was an employee…. well I’m still an employee but it’s a little different. Hank and I decided to get together and work towards a future together. So all this being said in 2008 we moved from Western Mass. to live in his Families farmhouse on Casco Bay in Harpswell, Maine with the company, our dog Klaus and started “living the dream” 2010 we tied the knot and are now enjoy life.

In the last few years I started a side buisness…H2H Driftwood Art & Gift. I make cool, funky, art, useful household items, lighting and painted signage. Using driftwood I collect as well as salvaged, reclaimed materials. Adding to my inventory, I started sewing market bags, messenger bags, small crossbody bags and wine totes using salvaged sail material and heavy cottons. Fun Stuff!

I also enjoy cooking, foraging wild produce such as several mushrooms (with caution), spring ramps (wild onion), blueberries and apples.

I also enjoy, bird watching… builting Bluebird boxes to attract these beautiful birds. We’ve had them for about 6 years now resting, breeding and returning in the spring to nest again.

Lastly, in 2017 I picked up a vintage camper 1967 Holiday Rambler Vacationer. It was going to be my mobile gift shop but I decided to fix it up…repaired water damage and make new cushions, new curtains in bright, funky colors and we use it as an overflow for guests and family. Just plug it in for light, heat and fridge. Well worth the challenge. Glamping at it’s best!

Thor Construction had up to 6 employees during this period doing several significant restoration jobs. In 2004, I hired Heidi to join the crew. We continued renovation and building until 2007. I realized I found my soulmate and in 2008 we moved Thor Construction to Harpswell, Maine. Moving into my family’s homestead, a rambling salt water farm.

Since then we have made our name here in Harpswell…Doing what we love…Building dream’s for our clients as well as  projects of in our own home. We have built a nice client list with lots of repeat jobs.

For fun I sail a Laser sail boats and compete in ocean kayak races. Heidi and I have embraced the Maine life converting an old cottage to a rental unit and have rented out to all kinds of people and enjoyed being hosts.

We also converted part of our barn into an office and workshop. We even used part of our barn for our wedding.

We often go out in our powerboat exploring the different islands of Casco Bay.
